Research to Practice
Professional Development
The research that informs how teachers grow. 21stCenturyEd defines the PD philosophy and the intellectual frameworks. Pdgogy.ai delivers the certification, coaching, and daily practice.
Our Philosophy
What we believe about teacher development
Most professional development fails because it is disconnected from daily practice, driven by vendor agendas, and measured by seat time rather than student outcomes. We built a different model.
Research-Grounded, Not Vendor-Driven
Every professional development experience we design originates from peer-reviewed research — not from a product roadmap. The National Academies, RAND Corporation, and decades of classroom practice inform what we build. The research comes first; the technology serves it.
Embedded, Not Extracted
RAND's research is unambiguous: effective PD must be sustained, job-embedded, and content-specific. We reject the "sit and get" workshop model. Teachers learn by doing — inside their daily workflow, not in a conference room disconnected from their students.
Capacity-Building, Not Dependency-Creating
The goal is not to make teachers dependent on a platform. It is to build their capacity to deliver integrated STEM instruction independently. The scaffolding is designed to fade as expertise grows — from novice to FaciliMentor™.
Equity as a Design Principle
Professional development must reach every teacher — including those without traditional STEM backgrounds. The structured 8-phase STEMbedding™ process scaffolds instruction so that any teacher, in any subject, can deliver high-quality integrated STEM lessons.
FaciliMentor™ Certification
The pathway from teacher to STEM literacy leader
A FaciliMentor™ is the teacher of the future — moving from "sage on the stage" to "guide on the side." The FaciliMentor™ certification pathway is the operational expression of our PD philosophy: teachers progress through four levels of the STEM Integration Continuum, building capacity to deliver integrated STEM instruction independently. The certification is delivered through Pdgogy.ai, where teachers receive AI-scaffolded coaching, structured lesson planning, and real-time feedback embedded in their daily workflow.

Research Foundation
DTIP™: The Research Behind the Practice
The Design Thinking Instructional Process (DTIP™) is the pedagogical framework that connects research to classroom practice. It is the intellectual foundation on which FaciliMentor™ certification and the STEMbedding™ process are built.
Design Thinking as Pedagogy
DTIP™ bridges the gap between traditional instruction and the competencies demanded by the modern workforce. It integrates design thinking, the scientific method, and the engineering process into a single instructional framework that teachers can apply across subjects.
AI Readiness and AI Literacy
DTIP™ explicitly addresses AI readiness and AI literacy as mandatory components. STEM literacy is foundational to AI readiness — the ability to create, shape, and collaborate with intelligent automated machines. DTIP™ ensures teachers can guide students toward this capability.
From Theory to Classroom Practice
The research behind DTIP™ draws from the National Academies of Sciences (2014), NSTA integrated STEM research, and the CSTEMES™ framework. It translates these findings into a structured process that teachers can implement on Monday morning.
The research behind DTIP™ and the broader STEM Literacy framework is documented in the STEM Century book series, peer-reviewed publications, and the STEM Century video documentary. For the complete research base, visit our Research page.
